I do not use AI.

The use of generative artificial intelligence tools (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) violates my core beliefs about what it means to live in a world of relationships.

My commitment:

Everything I write, build, create, design, & implement will come from me, not AI.

The context

Some of the data driving this position.

AI is destroying the planet.

Data centers that process AI queries require a staggering volume of water & produce toxic air and water pollution.

AI is intensely supremacist.

The same racist, sexist, ableist, & violent supremacist frameworks are accelerated by AI.

AI is destroying our minds and relationships.

AI is particularly harmful for young people who have not yet developed critical thinking skills, but no one is immune.

AI is priming us for authoritarianism.

By eroding our ability — & especially our desire — to think for ourselves, AI is preparing us to welcome dominant regimes.

AI is used to wage war.

Many governments, including the U.S. Department of Defense, have contracts with AI companies to surveil & attack.

AI is built on theft.

Lawsuits to compensate journalists, artists, & others whose work was stolen to train AI are advancing through the courts.

AI’s creators know they’ve unleashed a monster.

“AI will probably lead to the end of the world, but in the meantime, there will be great companies created…”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not that I can imagine at this time.

Unfortunately, AI is now built into many tools I use - making it increasingly difficult to avoid - but to the greatest extent possible, I do not use AI.

  • It depends; let’s talk about it!

If your AI use doesn’t directly involve my work, we can likely find a way forward together. However, if I’ll be required to use AI, or if my work will be fed into an AI, I’m probably not the right fit for your project.

  • If there’s one thing I believe, it’s that the boundaries between all of us are thin.

Collaboration is the cornerstone of my work - and even if it wasn’t, it’s unavoidable! When I say “all my work comes from me,” it means I was the one who synthesized all my knowledge and experiences into a deliverable, not AI.

  • The future is far from settled!

Despite what pro-AI mouthpieces would have us believe, we have agency. The anti-AI movement is large, and growing; companies, artists, faith leaders, media outlets, and others across sectors are committing to refusing its use.

  • It’s impossible to be a completely ethical consumer in modern life.

Imagine how the world would look today, though, if we’d always just given up?
